About Stephanie

“Working in this field, serving children with differing abilities and needs and supporting their families is an amazing privilege!”

Stephanie Peterson - Speech-Langauge Pathologist

Hi! I'm Stephanie and I am a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist who has over 20 years of experience providing services to the pediatric population. I was born and raised in sunny southern California where I earned my B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communicative Disorders from California State University, Long Beach. Since starting in the field, I served as a clinician, manager, and clinical director at an interdisciplinary pediatric treatment clinic in southern California until 2016 at which time I relocated to central Minnesota with my family. I always strive to provide a collaborative, family-friendly, developmental approach to treatment for children with a variety of diagnoses from birth to 18 years of age. My biggest passion is early identification and intervention; starting children on the road to reaching their full potential and empowering families to guide and support that journey. Parent education and training has always been an integral part of my service delivery model. I also enjoy providing training and education to other professionals and the wider community about early childhood development and early identification of, and language/communication support for, children on the autism spectrum.

Testimonials

Word on the Street

“Knowledgeable, professional, caring, supportive and successful are just a few words I’d use to describe Stephanie
Peterson. Three of my four children received speech therapy services from Stephanie, the youngest starting at 6 months. Combined they spent almost 10 years receiving speech services from her and they progressed and thrived under her care. Stephanie provided a happy, safe, and fun atmosphere in which to learn.”

What is a speech language pathologist?

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, and communication disorders. SLPs have a master’s degree in speech language pathology, are licensed by the state(s) in which they practice, and hold national certification from the America Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

At what point should I be concerned about my child’s development?

Children develop at their own pace, and individual differences or special circumstances need to be accounted for. This can only be determined by consulting with a speech-language pathologist. Both social and academic success depends on well-developed speech and language skills. An evaluation by a speech-language pathologist may be warranted if:

  1. Your child is frustrated when trying to communicate and the situation does not improve over a one- or two-month period.

  2. Your child has a delay of six months or more in developing speech and language skills.

  3. Your child has experienced chronic ear infections or an unusually long stay (six months or more) in the hospital.

  4. Your child is not understood by playmates or others outside of the immediate family

If you have concerns, you should have your child evaluated. You can reach out to set up an evaluation or ask your pediatrician for a referral. For ideas to enhance your toddler's speech and language development, download the FREEBIE below!!
